COUNTS OF CHAMPAGNE'S KEEP COUNTS OF CHAMPAGNE'S KEEP

Reception open : Included in guided tours for groups arranged in advanced at the Tourist Office

Description :

It stands on a spur of rock overlooking the Suize Valley more than 45 metres below and is the only trace of the castle of the Counts of Champagne built in the 11th and 12th centuries. It is a square tower some 20 metres tall and, over the centuries, it has retained its mediaeval appearance. Originally built as part of a system of defence, it was used as a prison from 1830 to 1866. It was at that time that the numerous graffiti were scratched into the interior walls by prisoners.
